A policeman has been suspended in Kashmir on Friday after a video showing him taking bribe from a trucker went viral on the social media.

The middle-aged cop is heard telling the driver in the minute-long video that the bribe should be paid to avoid being fined for driving the vehicle wearing a pheran (a traditional Kashmiri cloak).

The video, shot with a mobile phone, has been viewed by more than one lakh people since it was loaded on a social networking site on Thursday night.

Inspector general of police (traffic) Jagjit Kumar said the erring policeman has been identified and put under suspension.

He added the incident had taken place somewhere in a rural area in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

Assuring immediate action against such offenders, IGP Kumar asked people to promptly report such matters to the police.

In the video the policeman is also heard threatening the trucker: “I will take a picture of you wearing a pheran and send it to the judge along with the challan. I will tell him (Judge) that he (driver) is driving an LP (long platform) truck wearing a pheran.”

After receiving the bribe, the cop tried to strike an amiable chord with the driver, saying cops and truckers are always friends.
