Power sector still an irritant in Tamil Nadu

The power sector continues to be a source of concern in Tamil Nadu as chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday stepped into her third year in office. It is the same dismal power scenario that helped her mount a campaign against the DMK regime of M Karunanidhi.

Several small and medium units have closed down, agriculturists are suffering shortages, there are power cuts for long durations in rural areas and cities too have power cuts for at least two hours a day.

The government has managed to notch up a few achievements, however, such as getting the central government to notify the Cauvery final award on the distribution of the ri  ver waters between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. On the ground, Tamil Nadu government also became one of the first to kick off relief distribution to farmers hit by drought.
