Abhijit Mukherjee, President Pranab Mukherjee’s son and a member of Parliament from Jangipur constituency in Bengal, visited Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad in Birsa Munda Central Jail on Sunday evening.
Godda legislator and RJD leader Sanjay Yadav confirmed Mukherjee’s visit to the jail. “He (Mukherjee) met our leader (Lalu) at the jail and enquired about his health,” Yadav said.
However, senior district officials and jail authorities had ‘no information’ about the visit. Lalu is in Birsa Munda Central Jail after being sentenced to five-year imprisonment in a fodder scam case. Ranchi district commissioner Vinay Choubey said, “I have no information of honourable Mukherjee sir’s visit to jail. However, he is in Ranchi and visited Rajrappa temple on Sunday.”
This comes ahead of the President’s two-day Bihar visit on October 26 and 27. The proposed visit has touched a raw nerve, with the BJP asking the President to reschedule his programmes as they coincide with the saffron party’s Hoonkar Rally.
Reportedly, water resources minister Annapurna Devi and tourism minister Suresh Pawan also visited Lalu in the evening. This was after Lalu’s doctor Anwar Ahmad met the RJD leader and examined his health in the presence of jail doctors. A staffer of the jail hospital said Lalu was not suffering from any disease.
Earlier in the day, RJD party workers shouted slogans against the jail administration for not allowing them to meet Lalu. “We have come to Ranchi all the way from Patna to meet our leader, but the jail authorities are not allowing us to meet Lalu sir,” said Sanjay Yadav, a party worker.
According to jail authorities, generally no visitors are allowed to meet inmates on Sunday.
