Witnesses said soon after curfew was lifted in the town on Wednesday, hundreds of people assembled outside the CRPF camp in Gagren, Shopian, demanding the camp shall be shifted elsewhere.

Eyewitnesses said the security forces fired directly at the protesters, killing Mohammad Rafiq Rather, a resident of Shopian’s Bonasaidpora area.

Curfew had been imposed in the town on Saturday after the jawans of the same camp shot dead four youths, a few hours ahead of Zubin Mehta’s concert in Srinagar. Security had been heightened across the valley for the concert.

The local residents had said the four youths were civilians and had been killed in cold blood. The police too said three of the four killed were civilians and had no militancy record, while the fourth is suspected to be a Lashkar-e-Taiba militant. CRPF authorities, however, maintain the deceased got killed when they tried to attack the camp.

Curfew was re-imposed in the town, even as the clashes between the protesters and the security forces were on when this report was being filed. The police have refused to comment on the killing immediately.
