Questioning BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s qualifications to become the ‘chowkidar’ (guardian) of India’s financial resources, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said Gujarat’s model of development was putting “all the resources in the hands of two-three industrialists”.

Campaigning for the party nominee on the Gopalganj (reserved) seat, he said: “Someone who gave away land worth hundreds of crores of rupees to a corporate entity at throwaway prices can hardly be trusted as India’s chowkidar.”

“Neither I nor PM Manmohan Singh want to be a chowkidar. I want to give the keys to the people of India. Our model is for all,” Gandhi said during his last meeting in Bihar.

Gandhi mentioned how he had deflated the Gujarat model that Modi had been purveying in his electoral discourse. “Thanks to my logical reasoning as to why India needs an inclusive growth model, Modiji has stopped talking about his Gujarat model,” he said.

At another rally in West Bengal, the Congress vice-president said Modi had “a lot of anger” and he would “flee the scene the day his divisive politics stopped working”.

He added: “Abusing other leaders is not the sign of a true leader… Modiji has a lot of anger inside him. Whenever he speaks, the anger comes out. Actually this anger is a sign of inner fear and hatred for others. If you look at Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, they were fearless persons.

“Fear, hatred and ego... dividing communities and spreading hatred are not the signs of a leader. A leader is the person who gives a patient hearing to others and spreads the message of love and brotherhood,” Gandhi said.

Like Modi, Gandhi also raked up the Saradha scam to slam Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. He said that despite the loss suffered by the common people, Banerjee was protecting the Saradha scam culprits.
