No risk no gain: Cong goes all out to make Rahul’s rally a success

The Congress’ rally in Dakshinpuri on Sunday will be an attempt by the new state leadership to prove the party is on its course towards revival in the Capital.

The party has taken a huge risk to choose the same venue for party vice-president to address the crowd, where a large number of people had walked out even before he spoke during the assembly elections last year.

The rally last November was an indication of Congress losing its grip over its traditional vote bank – the Dalits and the poor. The Ramila Maidan in Dakshinpuri where the rally took place has two reserved assembly segments — Deoli and Ambedkar Nagar — on either side, which have always voted for Congress.

The party lost both seats to debutant AAP by big margins during the December assembly elections.

Sources said senior Delhi Congress leaders were now holding a number of corner meetings to mobilise the crowd for Sunday’s rally. While the November rally witnessed less than 5,000 people at Ramlia Maidan, the party this time is expecting more than 40,000 people to come and listen to Rahul Gandhi.

Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh said nobody in the surrounding area was aware that Rahul Gandhi was going to address a rally at Ramlila Maidan in November.

“This time we are having one-to-one meetings with the people of the area. A large number of people from the Valmiki Samaj will attend the meeting wearing colourful turbans and demonstrate that they are with the Congress,” Singh said.
