Rahul Gandhi will not keep his March 21 date with netizens on Google hangout, after a Congress re-think on plans to expose the party vice-president to an onslaught of questions from across the country, and the world.

According to Congress sources, party strategists first want to hold an ‘internal hangout’, tentatively on March 15, and watch the response when Rahul and other leaders interact with party workers and office-bearers on the coming Lok Sabha elections.

No new date has been finalised for Rahul’s interaction with net users on the party’s policies, programmes and electoral agenda. “Yes, he has opted out at this stage,” a Congress strategist said.

Google India spokesperson Paroma Roy Chowdhury said, “We don’t comment on speculation.”

In the run-up to polls, Rahul has largely kept off the media and even social media. After his only TV interview with Times Now on January 27, he has not agreed to similar requests from other news channels.

Finance minister P Chidambaram will now be the first guest for this season’s Google Hangout on March 25, HT has learnt.

Earlier, BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi had pulled out of a Facebook Talks Live programme scheduled for March 3. Newslaundry, which has tied up with Facebook for this series of interactions with prominent candidates, later issued a statement saying Modi had laid down some conditions for his participation.

Facebook later roped in Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal as its first guest for its March 4 programme.
