The Congress is planning to unleash its top guns in its campaign for the parliamentary elections in Delhi.

Party president Sonia Gandhi will address an election rally in New Delhi parliamentary constituency on March 30. The rally will mark the beginning of the Congress campaign for the election officially, said Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh.

The party has identified the famous Ajmal Khan Park near Karol Bagh for the rally.

Party vice-president Rahul Gandhi too is likely to address a rally in the first week of April in Delhi. The rally will be held either in East Delhi or South Delhi parliamentary constituencies.

Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh said all party leaders, including sitting and former MLAs and municipal councillors, have been told to mobilise the workers to make Sonia’s rally successful.

Sonia and Gandhi are among the star campaigners of the Congress.

“We are meeting the party workers as well as former and current legislators and councilors and handing out responsibilities for this election. Some of them have been told to help out the candidates in their campaigns. We are creating various committees that will be headed by leaders who understand Delhi and its electorate well,” Singh said.

The Delhi Congress also called a meeting of senior party functionaries including those who contested 2013 assembly elections on Monday. A similar meeting, said party leaders, with councillors and with district and block level party functionaries has been scheduled for Tuesday. “These are strategic meetings. We are trying to identify party functionaries for various committees,” Delhi Congress spokesperson Mukesh Sharma said.

Interestingly, this is first time the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee has taken over the complete management of elections in Delhi. While the Pradesh committee would name the committees and the members, it was the chief minister and her team who would take all decisions related to campaigns.

The All India Congress Committee released the list of party leaders and workers who are part of the campaign committee late on Monday evening. While former MLA Subhash Chopra is the chairman, senior leader Chatar Singh has been made the convenor of the 65-member campaign committee.

Delhi Congress, on Monday, also inducted former MLA Charan Singh Kandera and independent municipal councilor from Kotla, Kusumlata, into the party.
