Congress-affiliated independent candidate Shakuntala Rajaliwala won the Hisar mayoral election on Tuesday afternoon. In the 20-member municipal corporation, she secured 16 votes and four went to the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) candidate Rekha Aron, who was fielded by the party against Rajaliwala.
It appears that besides Congress-backed nine candidates, five independents and Haryana Janhit Congress-affiliated and two other independent candidates voted for Rajaliwala.
The Congress and Haryana Janhit Congress had not contested the election on party symbol, while the INLD and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did, on June 2.
The election to the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor will be held later.
After the oath of office was administered to the newly elected councillors at 4pm, Rajaliwala and Aron filed their nomination papers, following which voting took place.
Within almost half an hour, Rajaliwala was declared winner by resident commissioner Neelam Pradeep Kaasni, who conducted the ceremony.
Hundreds of Rajaliwala's supporters gathered outside the Panchayat Bhawan in Hisar where the ceremony took place.
After the results, Rajaliwala met local Congress MLA Savitri Jindal at Jindal House.
Listing out her priorities, she said: "We will work for all sections of our society and water, sanitation and improving street infrastructure would be the priority areas.
