The Rajasthan police on Thursday said examination of evidence matched the statement of the 16-year-old girl, who has brought rape charges against godman Asaram Bapu.
On Tuesday, the Delhi police booked the controversial self-styled godman for allegedly raping the teenager at his Jodhpur ashram on August 15. According to police, prima facie the girl’s statement matches what they found following inspection of the scene of the alleged crime at Asaram’s ashram in Manai village near Jodhpur.
Police are now preparing to interrogate Asaram at his ashram in Ahmedabad. “Soon, our team will leave to interrogate Asaram,” said commissioner of police Biju George Joseph.
“The owner of the land on which the ashram stands has confirmed the presence of the girl and her parents in the ashram on August 15,” he said.
Even as a spokesperson of the ashram claimed Asaram had left Jodhpur on August 11, the owner, Ranjeet Dewra, said Asaram, too, was at the ashram on August 15. Asaram’s supporters, however, alleged conspiracy. They handed over a memorandum to Joseph stating the rape allegation was false and an attempt to malign his image.
Meanwhile, in Jaipur, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot promised “action based on truth and facts”, even as BJP vice-president Uma Bharti said the rape charge could have been “politically motivated” as Asaram had been critical of Congress leadership.
