A National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) leader was arrested in Rajasthan’s
Bhilwara district on Tuesday on charges of rape and abetment of suicide on the basis of the dying declaration of a 3rd year college student.
The young woman allegedly set herself on fire on Monday night and was admitted to hospital with 90% burns. She died on Tuesday afternoon.
Before dying, she told the police that Ajit Singh, the students’ union president of Shiv Charan Mathur Government College in Mandalgarh town (about 50 km from Bhilwara), had pressured her into a relationship on the promise of marriage.
She said after sexually exploiting her for several months, he refused to marry her.
Mandalgarh deputy superintendent of police Dharmendra Yadav said, shattered by his betrayal and afraid to face her family, the girl set herself on fire.
Singh, who had been detained for questioning on Monday, was arrested on Tuesday, the DSP added.
Earlier in the day, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, a rival student political wing, had held a protest rally demanding the arrest of the accused.
