Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted the perfect throwback picture on Thursday, Ram Nath Kovind was declared the next President of India, wishing the NDA’s pick a “fruitful & inspiring tenure”.
Of the two pictures, one shows much younger Modi and Kovind smiling, while the other is a present-day capture. Modi wrote: “20 years ago and the present… always been a privilege to know you, President Elect”.
National Democratic Alliance candidate Kovind secured a massive victory over the Opposition’s candidate and former Lok Sabha speaker, Meira Kumar. Replacing Pranab Mukherjee, whose term ends on July 24, Kovind will be the second Dalit President after KR Narayanan.
Voting to pick India’s 14th President took place on July 17.
In a series of tweets, Modi thanked the electoral college for their “extensive support for Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji”.
He also congratulated Opposition’s candidate Meira Kumar for her campaign:
The President-elect, in his address, admitted that it was an “emotional moment” for him. “I never thought I will become president, it was never my goal,” said Kovind.
