Hindu right-wing groups have called a day-long Ranchi bandh on Monday to protest the alleged torture on a champion shooter by her husband to convert to Islam.
The groups also staged a torch light procession on Sunday evening to put pressure on the police over the incident involving national gold medalist shooter Tara Shahdeo.
Police sealed the residences of Tara’s husband, Ranjit Kohli alias Raqibul Khan and seized his cars on Sunday.
“We have called bandh to demand quick arrest of Ranjit Kholi alias Raqibul Khan, who trapped Tara Shahdeo to convert her to Islam,” said Vipin Bihari, a senior leader of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Police said they would take all steps to maintain law and order during the bandh period.
“Adequate forces will be deployed to prevent any untoward incident,” Ranchi senior superintendent of police (SSP) Prabhat Kumar said.
City police have also formed a special team led by a deputy superintendent of police to nab Kohli.
Police have slapped sections 498 (a) relating to domestic violence, 153 (a) relating to forced marriage and 295 (a) relating to forcible change of religion against Kohli.
Interestingly, the SSP added that Kohli’s mother Kaushalya Devi was a Muslim before her marrige to Harman Kohli. He said they were trying to ascertain if she had converted to Hinduism after marriage.
The SSP also added that police have found no documentary proof that Kohli had converted to Islam as claimed by his wife.
He said, two residences of Kohli in Argora and Ashok Nagar areas were sealed and seven vehicles seized.
On Wednesday, Shahdeo had lodged a complaint with Hindpiri police station against her husband claiming that that Kohli used to mentally and physically torture her to convert to Islam.
Kohli has gone missing after the complaint was lodged.
Tara also that her husband had converted to Islam five years back and hid the fact from her.
Shahdeo met Kohli during her shooting sessions in Hotwar. They were married this year in July according to Hindu rituals.
