With the declaration of the Jharkhand Academic Council’s (JAC) intermediate results on Saturday by HRD minister Geetashree Oraon, the biggest achievement can be attributed to science students who took a giant leap with the pass percentage this year.

Meanwhile, girls outperformed boys this time.

The pass percentage in science, a stream that has been subject of concern for the JAC over the years, increased from 38.28% in 2013 to 63.75% in 2014.

While this year marked the best performance by science students in the last decade, the Commerce students too surpassed their last year’s results (70.55) and secured 75.83 pass percentage this year.

Not only did the girls outperform boys in totality, but they also trumped them in both the streams in all the urban districts including Ranchi, Gumla, Lohardaga, Khunti, Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, East Singbhum and West Singbhum.

Debopriya Shukla of Raj Plus Two High School, Pakur, topped in Science by securing 89.4%, while with 83.6% marks, Rani Tarannum of Ursaline Inter College, Ranchi, stood first in Commerce.

In Commerce, Pakur topped among the districts with pass percentage of 88.60, followed by Hazaribagh that registered a pass percentage of 83.65 and Ramgarh where the pass percentage was 82.35. As many as 82,945 students appeared for the exam in Science stream, while in Commerce 46,179 students appeared for the test. Altogether, 52,800 students passed in Science, while 35,022 students passed in commerce.

Declaring the results in the presence of HRD secretary K Vidyasagar and JAC chairperson Anand Bhushan, Oraon attributed the success of the science students this year to the hard work of JAC and congratulated the council for declaring the results so early.
“We are 20 days ahead of the remaining country in declaring the results and it is a great achievement,” she said.

Meanwhile, taking credit for the satisfactory results, Bhushan said that the facilitators introduced by JAC this year to guide and help students in absence of teachers helped a lot. He said that the performance of the students was a result of joint efforts put in by the teachers, the JAC and the students.

The JAC officials confirmed that the intermediate results for arts stream is likely to be declared by May 30.
