A family has claimed that they helped a mother with fourth degree burns deliver her dead baby after nurses at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Jharkhand’s largest state-run hospital, denied them of any help on Monday. Admitted to the burn ward of the hospital in Ranchi with 90% burns, the woman was six months pregnant.

The woman’s family members said that she delivered a dead foetus on Monday night that caused her gruelling pain. They alleged that though the nurses were informed, they didn’t respond to the emergency.

“I used my hands to take out the baby,” claimed Nivedita, the victim’s sister, adding that they had come to Ranchi from Giridhi expecting help from the hospital but were refused. However, the supervising doctor Vinay Pratap has rubbished all allegations saying that the family has leveled the charges after he told the woman’s family that the patient had suffered 100% burns and her chances of surviving are thin.

“I have submitted the report and medical papers. The dead foetus had been removed on Monday. It is false that family members took out the fetus,” said Pratap.

Nivedita added that her sister received the burns at her in-laws’ place and after being referred from a Bokaro hospital was admitted to RIMS.

She denied any dowry angle to the case and said that her in-laws were helping them in treatment.

Associate professor with the surgery department, Pratap said that the patient was referred from Bokaro General Hospital. Hospital authorities said that the woman had received the burns on May 15 but was admitted after four days on May 19 at RIMS.
