Dhanbad witnesses record turnout of women voters

A large number of women went out in the hot sun to cast their votes in Dhanbad on Thursday. Similarly in Wasseypur, which is around three kilometres away from the district headquarters, women stood in long queues at several booths to cast their votes.

According to an official, the huge turnout may be the result of district administration’s voting awareness campaign. Both rural as well as urban areas witnessed huge turnout of women voters, the official said.

Though the polling officials could not reveal the exact figure of women voters, they claimed that the district recorded best polling this year. In 2009, around 44% women casted their votes. 

“The credit goes to both the women voters and the awareness campaign launched by election commission and social organisations. The new generation of minority community has become more aware of their voting rights,” said Wikis Khanam, a social activist of Wasseypur.

Interestingly, the Modi factor has also played a major role in luring women. According to the daughters of Kanchan Devi, a resident Manoram Nagar, they came to support BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi.
