The villagers of Raja Basti in Sindri township, around 28 km away from the district headquarters, organised the adalat on Sunday night and imposed the penalty on Rameswer Marandi, Subir Kumar Dan, his wife Jhumu Dan and Rajesh Kumar for casting votes at booth number 301 of the Sindri assembly segment despite a poll boycott call given by the villagers.

The adalat also announced that in case the four fail to deposit the amount they would be tonsured and made to move around the village without clothes.

The residents of Raja Basti had given the boycott call in support of their demand of separating two wards - ward no 55 and ward no 12 - from the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation limits. The villagers want that the wards should be merged with the panchayat. But the four villagers defied the decree and cast their votes on April 24.

To punish them for going against the diktat, the villagers tortured the four and later imposed the penalty on them.

After getting information, local BJP leaders informed the police and rescued the villagers. The Baliapur police station under which Raja Basti falls was also informed.

However, no FIR was lodged, till the time of filing the report.

The shocked and frightened victims did not disclose the names of the villagers who tortured them.

Deputy superintendent of police (DSP), Sindri range, Rama Shankar Singh, said the police would initiate legal action against those villagers who held the jan adalat.

“The victims would be provided full protection,” he said.
