In an age of stylised political campaigning with leaders donning fashionable attire, there is a set of politicians in the 2014 election fray in Jharkhand who are still sticking to traditional apparels like dhoti-kurta and kurta-pajama.

The foremost stickler to the conventional is Karia Munda, deputy speaker of the 15th Lok Sabha and BJP candidate from Khunti parliamentary seat. Karia Munda has never shunned the traditional attire when others have gone for suits, safaris and other modern wears.

Another Jharkhand icon who is a great votary of kurta-pajama is JMM chief Sibu Soren. He sticks to the Aligarhi pajama and kurta prepared from Khadi clothes.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) chief Babulal Marandi has also not changed his dressing style sticking still with the comfortable dhoti-kurta.

JVM-P spokesperson Saroj Singh said, “Babulalji occasionally wears western formals. He feels comfortable in kurta-pajama and dhoti-kurta.” CPI veteran and state party secretary Bhubaneshwar Mehta prefers silk kurta, bundi, cotton dhotis and pajamas.

Former Dhanbad Congress MP Chandrashekhar Dubey also swears by dhoti-kurta, albeit, the south Indian style. His BJP opponent and incumbent MP PN Singh loves to wear kurta-pajamas. Singh said, “It is the most comfortable out of all attires.”
