In keeping with his promise to the young footballers of the Yuwa soccer club in Ormanjhi last month, Union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh returned to Ranchi on Thursday to gift the girls a 25-seater mini bus and hand over documents of the land for a football field.

Five years ago, American Franz Gastler founded this club for tribal girls between 12 and 14 years in this small town, 20 km from Ranchi. Earlier this year they played their first international match in Spain.

When Ramesh met them on August 9, the girls had put in a request for a permanent football ground as their erstwhile practice spot, a private ground had been tilled — and a bus to facilitate their daily commute from their respective villages for the evening practice.

Five acres of government land has been earmarked in Dahu village, Ranchi. It will be developed into a playground under MNREGS.

“My department has already mandated at least one playground in every tribal village. The achievements of these girls will inspire several tribal sportsmen and women to play for the nation,” said Ramesh.
