Bokaro: The state headquarters has directed all the districts to immunise the poll staff, including the police jawans, against malaria before the Lok Sabha elections in Jharkhand. It may be noted here that a large number of jawans from the state and other areas of the country would be posted here on poll duty.

According to the instruction, presumptive treatment for malaria is to be given to each jawan posted for the polls. Every jawan would be administered 10 tablets of chloroquine to evade the disease even if any mosquito bearing malaria parasite bites them.

The Bokaro health department has asked various forces including the CRPF, CISF and the district police to give information about the number of jawans that would be engaged in poll duty.

“We have adequate quantity of medicine for the polling staff and the jawans. At the village level, the local sahiyas have the malaria testing kits and the medicines. They would be in contact with the police force,” said civil surgeon SBP Singh.

“Many jawans would be coming to Jharkhand from areas which are malaria sensitive. The infected jawans could spread the virus among others. So, we would administer preventive medicine to all jawans from outside the state,” said the district malaria officer AK Poddar.

He said that a large area of Bokaro district was malaria prone. He said that biovalent medical kits, which could test both plasmodium falciparum and plasmodium vivax type of malaria, would be made available at the village level.
