Jharkhand: One killed as police open fire on warring communities

One person was killed and more than a dozen others injured when police opened fire on two groups clashing over a piece of land at Shilgai village in Chanho, about 55 km from the state capital on Tuesday.
The injured included police and administrative officials, hit during stone-pelting by the warring groups.
The incident took place in the morning soon after Eid namaaz when two communities —  tribals and Muslims — clashed with claims and counter-claims over a piece of land forcing police to open fire.
The tribals alleged that the administration handed over a plot of land for an Idgah and a madrasa without their consent or the approval of the gram sabha.
The injured persons and cops were admitted to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) hospital for treatment. One person who received bullet injuries succumbed to his injuries and was brought dead. He was identified as one Dasrath Oraon (25), a local villager.
According to police report, 10 persons including three cops were injured.
Officer in-charge of Chanho police station Ramavatar said the police had to fire in blank to disperse the mob that went violent.
SP (Rural) SK Jha, DSP RP Kishore, SDM Amit Kumar also sustained injuries when the mob pelted stones in retaliation, he said.
The administration clamped section 144 of IPC in entire Chanho block following the clashes and the situation was  said to be tense but under control.
The circle officer had scheduled a meeting on July 28 to sort out the issue but it remain unresolved.
The villagers blocked the Ranchi-Lohardaga highway for hours.
