Jharkhand ‘love jihad’ accused held in New Delhi

The Jharkhand Police arrested Ranjit Kohli alias Raquibul Khan (Hassan) in New Delhi late Tuesday for allegedly torturing his wife, national rifle shooting gold medallist Tara Shahdeo, to change her religion to Islam. Director general of police Rajeev Kumar confirmed the late-night development.

The mother of the accused was also arrested from Dwarka in the national capital.

Shahdeo had lodged a complaint with Hindpiri police station last Wednesday against her husband, claiming that Kohli used to mentally and physically torture her to convert to Islam since their marriage on July 17. Kohli had gone into hiding after the complaint was lodged. Shahdeo alleged that her husband had converted to Islam five years back, but hid the fact from her.

The Centre on Monday sought a report from the Jharkhand government over the alleged conspiracy to convert the shooting champion. The episode was described by the saffron brigade as another instance of “love jihad”.
