The police have arrested a shopkeeper in Dumka district on charges of raping his seven-year-old daughter.

The man allegedly abused his daughter, the eldest of three children, at home on Sunday evening. His wife, who works as a domestic help, was not at home.

The police arrested the man on Monday on the basis of his wife's complaint and produced him in court, which remanded him in judicial custody.
The child's mother told the police her husband was violent and abusive. She claimed he was given to beating her as well the children.

A deputy superintendent of police looking into the case said the child was sent to hospital for medical examination.
