Industries minister Narayan Rane, while announcing the Congress’ assembly poll campaign plans on Friday, took on the BJP government and called it two-faced for having failed to deliver on its pre-poll promises.

The party will formally kick start the campaign on September 1 and this time around, the Congress feels that offence will be the best defence and hence negative campaigning is not being ruled out.

Rane, who is heading the campaign for his party, said the Congress would actively take on the Opposition by exposing its hypocrisy, while highlighting the work done by the state government.

“PM Modi has been inaugurating works that have been conceptualised by the Congress. We complete the work and they take the credit,’’ Rane said.

Backing CM Prithviraj Chavan, Rane said that heckling of the state’s chief minister and their senior leaders will not be tolerated by the Congress.

Slamming Modi’s recent statement about ‘garibi hatao’, Rane said, “In Gujarat, he has not been able to reduce poverty. The Congress was successful in reducing poverty in concrete figures. We will take this contrast to the people,’’ he said.

The panel has also decided to highlight the Opposition’s divisive trends.

It remains to be seen whether the party currently has the wherewithal to deliver on this strategy.
