CBI director Ranjit Sinha on Thursday sent his reply to the National Commission for Women (NCW) notice expressing regret for his insensitive rape analogy that had invited bitter criticism from women activists.

NCW had on Wednesday given the CBI chief 24 hours to explain his objectionable remarks.

“The CBI director has sent his reply, expressing regret for any hurt caused as it was unintended and inadvertent,” said a CBI source adding, “The director detailed the context in which the proverb was used and expressed his deep regard and respect for women and commitment to gender issues.”

While supporting the legalisation of betting in sports at a conference on Tuesday, Sinha had said, “...It is like if you can’t prevent rape enjoy it.”

NCW member Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar, who had sent the notice to the CBI director on Wednesday remained incommunicado throughout Thursday evening. On Wednesday, Prabhavalkar had told HT, “NCW would not be satisfied with a mere apology from the CBI director. If we are not satisfied with the response we would recommend his sacking.”
