Making an impressive electoral debut, the All India NR Congress (AINRC) in alliance with ADMK today secured a two-third majority in the 30-member Puducherry Assembly, ending the DMK-supported Congress rule.

The AINRC had been formed by the former chief minister N Rangasamy on the eve of the polls. Today, the party rode to power, winning 15 seats while its ally won five.

The Congress ended with a tally of seven and the DMK two. DMK rebel VMC Shivakumar won the Neravi TR Pattinam segment. It was sweet vengeance for Rangasamy, who had floated the AINRC after resigning from the Congress nearly two years ago. He had been removed from the post of chief minister due to a revolt in party ranks against his leadership.

Rangasamy won from both of the constituencies he had contested from—Kadirgamam and Indira Nagar.

Current chief minister V Vaithilingam, who succeeded Rangasamy, won but the state’s welfare minister M Kandasamy and PWD minister Mohd Shajahan lost. So did the assembly speaker R Radhakrishnan.

A jubilant Rangasamy said the outcome was a verdict by people and that he would soon decide when to meet the Lt Governor and stake his claim for forming government.

CPI, CPI(M) and the DMDK, which are a part of the victorious alliance, however drew a blank. All three had contested one seat each. Meanwhile, PMK—a part of the ruling alliance—lost both the seats it contested. The VCK too lost the lone seat it had been allocated.
