Union science and technology minister Jaipal Reddy on Monday agreed with Bharat Ratna awardee CNR Rao’s view that sufficient funds are not earmarked for scientific research in the country.

“He is right… I don’t disagree with him because the importance of science and technology is so high that any amount the government allots is not adequate,” he said. However, Reddy was quick to add that the government has been giving the maximum possible funding, keeping the financial stringency in view.

Meanwhile, a day after his angry outburst against politicians raised eyebrows, Rao clarified he was only signalling that the inadequate funding of science in the country was an “idiotic” situation.

The 79-year-old scientist said he had never called politicians “idiots” and asserted that he would never use the word again. “Our investment is not good; that is a bit idiotic…that’s all I said... not in anger. I’m not an angry man. Unfortunately, they don’t understand the priority. That is what I said,” Rao said in Bangalore.

However, he said the word is used in British parliament: “The PM is doing idiotic things -- they will say, nobody will be upset by that. I don’t know why you are upset here.”
