Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday demonstrated against the killing of a Sarpanch in Baramulla district and burnt an effigy of the state government.

BJP activists alongwith hundreds of Panchayat members this afternoon protested in Gangyal area and blocked the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway against the killing of a Sarpanch on Sunday.
The protestors led by Baldev Singh Baloria, convenor BJP Panchayat Cell, blamed the state for its failure to provide security to the panches and sarpanches.
"Number of sarpanches have been killed by the militants and hundreds resigned due to fear," Baloria said.

He said that yesterday's killing has cleared that the government is not serious with security to Panchayat members.

He, however, demanded that the government should take serious note to provide the security to elected representatives besides giving financial and judicial powers to panchayats and it cannot be possible without implementation of the 73rd amendment in the state.
