The Supreme Court on Friday refused to stay counselling for admission to Indian Information Technology (IIT), Madras.

It also issued a notice to the Centre and the institute on a petition challenging the award of grace marks for wrong questions in the JEE advanced examination for admission to IITs.

The institution awarded three grace marks for an incorrect question in Chemistry and four for a question in Mathematics to all students, irrespective of whether they attempted the wrong question or not.

The petitioner, a student from Vellore, moved the top court challenging the grant of grace marks to all and asked for a direction to issue a revised merit list.

He argued that those who did not attempt the question should not get the marks.

He told the court that the merit list got altered due to the error and many students had to suffer as a result.

His plea for a stay on the counselling process was declined and the top court fixed July 7 for the next hearing as it sought a response to his petition.
