Students and teachers of Tagore Bal Niketan Senior Secondary School, alma mater of late astronaut Kalpana Chawla, remembered her on her 10th death anniversary at Sector 6 here on Friday.
The gathering led by Sumita Singh, local member of legislative assembly, paid a floral tribute to Chawla.
The MLA urged students to consider Kalpana as their role model. “Despite being a resident of a small town, she excelled in all fields, including getting admission at the aeronautical engineering and then working as space scientist at NASA. Her life is full of inspiration and had special love for students,” she said.
On the occasion, two students of the school were honoured with Kalpana Chawla award instituted by Rupa and Co, a leading publishing house of the country.
Samriti Sandhan and Shubham Sain, science students of Class 11, were given a cash prize of Rs. 21,000.
Principal Dr Rajan Lamba said that in 2004, Rupa and Co had announced to honour students of the school with a cash reward from its ND Memorial Trust.
He said students were selected on the basis of their overall performance in the past three years.
This year, the cash reward was increased to Rs. 21,000 from Rs. 11,000, Lamba added.
