A government school teacher has been arrested for allegedly cutting off the hair of six girl students in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh, police said on Friday.

“The accused, identified as Pushpendra Patel, posted as a maths teacher at the Government Higher Secondary School, Naharpali under Bhupdeopur police station limits, was held on Thursday night based on the complaint of the students’ relatives,” Raigarh Additional Superintendent of Police UBS Chauhan said.

According to the complaint, Patel forcibly chopped off the hair of six girl students of class IX and X with a pair of scissors on Thursday saying they come to school for studying not to show off their long hair.

When the students reached home, they narrated the incident to their parents, who approached police, he said.

The accused was booked under IPC Sections 352 (assault or criminal force), 509 (act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and Section 23 of Juvenile Justice Act, the ASP said.

Further investigation into the case is on.
