A Class 12 student was found hanging in her Gurgaon school bathroom Thursday afternoon minutes after she was allegedly ticked off by a teacher for texting a male friend. The school said it was a suicide but parents alleged foul play.
A student of Rotary Public School in Sector 23, the 17-year-old girl was found hanging from an exhaust fan with a piece of cloth in one of the girls’ bathrooms on the third floor of the building that abuts Palam Vihar police station, said sources.
“The veins in both the hands of the victim were found cut above the wrists,” ACP (crime) Rajesh Kumar said. The cause of death would only be ascertained after the post-mortem examination that would be conducted Friday, the police said. They were waiting for the parents to lodge a complaint to register a case, the ACP said.
"She was found texting a male friend during class and was reported by a classmate," principal Gulshan Dewaan said. The phone was seized and some “objectionable text messages found”, she said. The girl was not scolded but was told that her father would be informed, Dewaan said. “Thereafter, she went missing and her teacher went looking for her.”
One of the toilets was locked in. A sweeper was called to break open the door after a woman staff saw the girl hanging, she said. The girl was pronounced dead by the school doctor. “We immediately informed the father and the police,” she said.
Sources said the entire incident happened between 12.30pm and 1.15pm.
The girl’s father, a businessman and resident of tony DLF city Phase 4, however, said, “The school played hide-and-seek with me all along. I got a call around 1pm, saying the vice-principal wanted to meet me.”
As he was rushing back from Delhi, another call came, saying “my child had committed suicide”. “If the school wanted to discuss the cellphone episode, they could have told me the first time, but they didn’t. Why?” he said.
