State disaster management minister Yashpal Arya said that with more people dying in the cloudburst, which triggered landslides, the death toll since Friday’s calamity had risen to 39. He said 28 people were still missing after Friday’s cloudburst and 420 families had been affected. Seventeen villagers were seriously injured.

Arya said UPA chief Sonia Gandhi would visit Uttarkashi and Rudraprayag districts on Tuesday to meet cloudburst victims and take stock of relief operations.

“We are trying to rescue as many villagers as possible but the prospect looks dim,” an official at Rudraprayag said.
