And in another case, Qaiser Ahmed Dar, a Kashmiri student who had gone to MP to register himself as a Ph D student at Sagar University, is supposedly in the custody of the anti-terrorist squad (ATS) of Bhopal. However, the ATS has denied this.

Those nabbed on Friday have been identified as Shaukat Ahmed Hakeem and Mehrajuddin Shergujri, residents of north Kashmir. They were arrested following a tip-off from J&K police.

Director general SK Rout said police were looking for them in two cases — one of murder and the other concerning the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. A J&K police team would come to Bhopal to take them back, Rout said.

Both are said to be aides of Hurriyat leader Masarat Alam, a separatist arrested by police in October on charges of inciting violence.

On the other hand, Qaiser Ahmed Dar, who had gone for an entrance test at Sagar University, had been picked up by the ATS in Sagar, his family members and friends say.

Dar had been untraceable since December 23, and his family had lodged a complaint with local police.

Dar’s friend told HT: “On Friday we (Dar’s sister and the friend) received a call from Qaiser, who said he had been picked up by the ATS on December 23 but (he was allowed) to make the call.”

But the ATS is denying the charge. “He is not with us,” said police superintendent (ATS) Dharamveer Yadav. Inspector General (Kashmir zone) SM Sahai said: “We are trying to clarify things. More than this we cannot say anything.”
