Sexually harassed 15-year-old sets herself afire

A minor girl, who was allegedly sexually harassed by a youth, set herself afire in Singrauli district on Monday. She died during treatment at a hospital. The incident came to light a day after a minor girl alleged that she was gang raped in a moving bus.

The incident took place at Nagma village under Mada police station. The 15-year-old victim was alone at home when she took the extreme step.

As per a report reaching here a youth Sanjay Rawat, a resident of the same village had made an attempt to rape her two days back. The girl's mother told the media that the girl was feeling mortified after the incident.

About 9.30am on Monday the girl poured kerosene on herself and set herself ablaze. The neighbours heard the screams of the girl and rushed to her house. They later doused the fire and rushed her to the district hospital at Waidhan but she died during the treatment about 2pm, said police.

The family members came to about the sexual harassment only after the girl set herself afire. While battling for her life she told her parents about the incident of sexual harassment.

The girl recorded her statement in front of the Tehsildar and police official concerned before she breathed her last.

Sub divisional officer of Police (SDOP) RS Parihar said, "In her dying declaration girl said that her neighbour Sanjay Rawat had made an attempt to rape her. It was the only reason behind her extreme step."

He further said that a case had been registered against the youth and a police team had also been sent to nab him. The accused is still at large.
