On a day when top Delhi Police officials were personally supervising security arrangements in the Capital due to the first anniversary of the December 16 gang rape case, two cases of rapes surfaced -- a one-and-a-half year old girl was sexually assaulted by a neighbour and the other os a 19-year-old girl raped in northeast Delhi.

The shocking case of the minor's rape comes from the Capital's high-security Chanakyapuri zone. The toddler's mother called the police after she found that a neighbour had assaulted her daughter around 9pm.

In her complaint, the woman accused neighbour Shiv Lal, 50, of allegedly sexually assaulting her daughter who was alone at home on Sunday afternoon.

"At around 2pm, the woman stepped out for some work with her four-year-old daughter when an inebriated Shiv Lal entered her house and attempted to sexually assault her younger daughter," said a police officer on the condition of anonymity.

The woman returned home at night to find her daughter scared and uneasy. She asked her daughter if anything bad had happened to her and the girl narrated the incident. "A case under the appropriate sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was registered against Shiv Lal and he was arrested later. The medical examination of the girl confirmed sexual assault attempt," the officer added.

The second rape call was received from northeast Delhi's GTB Enclave. The woman caller alleged that her 19-year-old niece was raped by a youth known to her. On the basis of the complaint, a case of rape was registered against one Ravindra, 19, a resident of east Delhi's Jagatpuri. Ravindra is absconding, the police said.

Meanwhile, the police received 17 calls from women in need. While two calls were related to rape and sexual assault, another five calls were about molestation. The remaining 10 calls were related to women in distress. Another call related to molestation was received on Monday morning as well, sources in the police said.

Several top police officials, including the police commissioner, were patrolling the streets in the city from around 11pm on Sunday till 4am on Monday.
