Shops downed shutters in Shillong for some hours on Monday as different students' and women's groups of Meghalaya held a meeting following Sunday evening's clash between army jawans and locals over alleged molestation attempt of a minor girl.

All shops and business establishments in Bishnupur and adjacent Labang remained closed upto 12 in the afternoon in response to the call by local groups, reports said.

In another development, the Khasi Students Union (KSU), several women groups and other local bodies held a meeting in Shillong to chalk out a "decisive course of action against frequent misconduct of defence personnel against unarmed civilians."

The organisations also submitted a memorandum to the Meghalaya Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee seeking intervention.

Local MLA Sanbor Shullai dashed a letter to Defence minister A K Anthony alleging the Army and other defence forces were involved in frequent cases of harassment of people in different parts of Shillong.
