Siliguri mayor Ashok Bhattacharya was hit on his forehead with a microphone stand and files were flung towards him by the councillors during the meeting.
Siliguri mayor and CPI(M) leader Ashok Bhattacharya suffered injuries after Trinamool Congress councillors hit him with a microphone stand during a meeting at the Siliguri Municipal Corporation on Saturday.
Bhattacharya was hit on his forehead with a microphone stand and files were flung towards him by the councillors during the meeting, CPI(M) Darjeeling district committee convener Jibesh Sarkar said.
However, the Trinamool Congress denied the allegations.
Left Front councillors took the mayor to a hospital after the incident. According to doctors, the injury was mild but he was admitted to the CCU due to his falling blood pressure.
The incident took place during a board meeting where the mayor and TMC councillors had some arguments.
Leader of Opposition Ranjan Sarkar said,”We did not attack the mayor. We only tore files in protest. He is just doing politics.”
Later, Ranjan Sarkar and another TMC councillor Nantu Paul complained of chest pain and were admitted to hospital.
Before the meeting, the TMC workers had held a protest in front of the Corporation building against poor drainage system in the city which has led to an increase in the habitat of mosquitoes.
Left Front workers blocked the Hillcart road to protest against the attack, disrupting traffic in the area.
