Six Maoists, two jawans killed in two incidents

Security persons gunned down at least six Maoists during an operation on Thursday in Latehar district of Jharkhand, official sources said.

However, a trooper of Combat Battalion for Resolute Action), a special force raised to fight left-wing extremism, was killed and another injured in an encounter that lasted nearly two hours at a spot 100 km north of Ranchi.

In another incident in Chhattisgarh, a constable of the state police was killed on Thursday in a gun battle with Maoists in Sukma district, about 400 km south of Raipur.

The Latehar encounter started around 11.30am, when the security persons were carrying out a combing operation.

Latehar SP Kranthi Kumar Gadidesi said: “The Maoists had to suffer heavy casualties during the encounter.”
In Chhattisgarh Sukma SP Abhishek Sandilya told HT: “One jawan sustained bullet injuries and died on the way to hospital. The Maoists attack was swiftly repulsed by the troopers.”
