Sources said though a case of rape was registered the same day at the SGM Nagar police station, the incident was kept under the wraps by the police owing to the bad press it had got over a spate of cases of crime against women in Haryana, recently.

The girl had gone out to answer the call of nature when the youth tried to rape her. When the girl resisted he hit her with a brick and then raped her while the victim was profusely bleeding, a senior police officer said.

The victim's mother, who came out around that time, saw the rapist fleeing. She lodged a complaint with the police and the case was handed over the crime investigation agency.

With no substantive evidence except the eyewitness account of the victim's mother, the investigators took about 400 photographs of the potential suspects and showed them to her.

Finally, she identified Jitesh Kumar alias Jeetu, who hails from Nawada village. Jeetu was arrested on Saturday night and the matter came to light only when he was produced before the court.

Jeetu has been remanded in judicial custody.
