In the first major reshuffle of his over-two-year-old government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday sprang a surprise when he replaced his human resource development minister Smriti Irani and brought in former environment minister Prakash Javadekar in her place.

Irani, who was once widely regarded as one of Modi’s favourites, had a controversial run as the HRD minister, with accusations of meddling with the autonomy of universities and other institutions.

Twitter was abuzz with the unexpected reshuffle of portfolios of some senior ministers, with around 10,000 tweets being posted about Irani in just over an hour.

The key portfolios of home, defence, finance and external affairs were unchanged but finance minister Arun Jaitley was relieved of the additional portfolio of information and broadcasting minister.
