The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) decided to shut schools after 95 per cent of those it polled through SMS said there should be no classes.
Schools will stay shut till August 21, two days more than in the rest of the state.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said the extra days were merely an additional precaution.
Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak decided to conduct the SMS poll after the Shiv Sena-dominated BMC demanded a school shutdown.
Corporators and Mayor Shubha Raul weren’t pleased at his decision.
“No corporator was elected through an SMS poll, like in reality shows,” said Raul. “When [Sena executive president] Uddhav Thackeray demanded the shutting of schools, Phatak said the flu hadn’t spread enough.”
The municipal corporation received a good response to its helplines too.
Till 6.30 pm on Wednesday, it received nearly 2,250 calls. The questions ranged from what precautions to take to what swine flu symptoms are.
