Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Monday sparked off a Twitter debate after he allegedly threatened to “crush media indulging in anti-Congress propaganda”.

The controversy only grew bigger on Tuesday when he clarified his remark by saying his comments were meant for social media platforms and not journalists.

"My comments were on the social media. It was with regards to the issue related to the North-East students who were being targeted in Hyderabad and Karnataka. It was not on journalists," he said.

Shinde's remarks drew him the ire of the Twitteratti. People made fun of his statement and said he had made a 'u-turn'.

"Hey Shinde, What's the point crushing media? It'll still be pulp only," tweeted @rameshsrivats to his more than 1,67,000 followers.

Referring to Shinde's clarification, @prempanicker tweeted, "THAT’S how you gaffe your mouth with both feet"

"Now Sushil Kumar Shinde claims he wasn't referring to the media but social media. So he won't "crush" journalists, just other citizens?" tweeted another user @pierrefitter.

@coolfunnytshirt tweeted "Digvijay & Kejriwal just accepted Shinde's friend request after his latest U-turn. #CrushMedia" to his more than 22,500 followers.

Twitter whiz kids tapped the opportunity to spin puns and @diogeneb took it one step further by tweeting - No wonder "Sushil Kumar Shinde" anagrams to "krush slush in media".

@bibekdebroy tweeted, "Mr Shinde hasn't had a brush with social media. He only has a crush." while, @Trendulkar brought the much talked about game 'Candy Crush' into the picture by tweeting "Just received a Candy Crush request from Shinde."

"Just in: AIMMS doctors fail to remove foot from sushil kumar Shinde's mouth." tweeted @indiantweeter after Shinde's clarification.

'Shinde' continued to trend in India for almost the whole day and #CrushMedia too had a short sting in the trends.

As if the puns and jokes weren't enough, some Twitter users quickly came up with memes ridiculing the home minister.

The jokes continue, and so does the criticism. Sample the following tweets for your laughter dose of the day:
