The Modi government will review all appointments in central government educational institutions including central universities, IITs and other centrally funded institutes, made by the UPA government in its ten-year rule.

Human resource development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani termed some of the appointment by the UPA government “shocking” as they were done overruling recommendations of the search committees.

“There have been a number of complaints against many appointments and we are looking at each of them closely,” she told reporters on Thursday.

She said most of her time at the ministry was taken at “firefighting” the appointment issue.

Ministry officials said appointments done at the fag end of the UPA government and during the reign of her predecessors Kapil Sibal and Pallam Raju were under ministry’s scanner.

Some appointments likely to be scrutinized include those as Vice Chancellors (VCs) of central universities of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and Rajasthan.

Former HRD minister Murli Manohar Joshi had recently raked up the issue of appointments of VCs in at least 15 central universities during the UPA regime and he had written to the President in this regard.
