In a police operation against militants at a remote area of Assam's Karbi Anglong district, the superintendent of police (SP) of Hamren police district and his personal security officer (PSO) were killed Thursday night.

The bodies of the 58-year-old SP, Nityananda Goswami, and his PSO were recovered Friday morning.

The United People's Liberation Army (UPLA), a newly formed militant outfit, has claimed responsibility for the killing. UPLA secretary Tonglat Tulang informed the media that the outfit had eliminated two police officials.

"The details of the tragedy will only come to light after investigation," said Assam director general of police Khagen Sarma.

"Three militant outfits have been active in the area where our team went on Thursday evening for an operation against the militants."

He said the three outfits active in the Hamren police district were UPLA, Karbi People's Liberation Tigers (KLPT), and the United Liberation front of Assam (ULFA).

Sarma added that the offensive against militants in Karbi Anglong hills district would be intensified in the coming days.

Ten companies of Central Armed Police Forces would be deployed in the militant-riddled hills district of Assam.

Police said Goswami on Thursday evening led 25 members to carry out a search operation based on a tip-off about the movement of a group of militants at Rangphu area, adjacent to Jaintia hills along the Assam-Meghalaya border in the district. The police team was divided into three groups before the encounter began.

A police commando, who was part of the operation, told the media that hundreds of militants laid an ambush for them at three places in the hilly terrain.

Both the SP and his PSO's bodies bore cuts on their ears and legs. The militants had buried the two bodies near a small rivulet in the Rangphu area.

The UPLA was formed recently by some former Karbi tribal militants.

On June 3, police had busted a UPLA training camp at Punja area in Hamren police district.

The Hamren police district inside Karbi Anglong hills district was created last year.
