Spurned, engg student hacks girl to death in Hisar

Upset over being spurned by her friend, an engineering student of the local Guru Jhambeshwar University of Science and Technology on Monday hacked her to death.

The accused, Pradeep Nain (21), a final-year student of B Tech (mechanical), allegedly attacked Gitika (20), a final-year student of B Tech (computer science), with a sharp-edged weapon while she was sitting at the shopping centre of the university around 5.45pm.

Rajesh Malhotra, proctor of the university, told this reporter that the students present at the spot caught the assailant and handed him over to police. Gitika, a resident of Hansi, was a hosteller.

The two were reportedly close to each other, but of late the girl had distanced herself from Nain, a resident of Hisar, and out of frustration he committed the crime.

Vice-chancellor Dr ML Ranga could not be contacted as he is away to the US.

In a similar incident, on August 10, Chetan Sheoran (21) had stabbed Varsha Yadav (18), a student of the university and a hosteller, to death at the same spot for a similar reason. The security staff had overpowered him and handed him over to the police.
