The crime branch on Saturday formally arrested Mushtaq Ahmad Peer, former chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Exams (JKBOPEE), whose name has figured in the medical entrance exam paper leak case. The crime branch in Kashmir had registered a case of fraud in 2012.

Sources in the crime branch reveal that it's a multi-million scam where candidates seeking admission to professional colleges allegedly paid huge sums of money to get the papers and stayed in a private hotel to write their tests. Professional entrance tests are conducted every year in Jammu and Kashmir by the Board of Professional Entrance Exams (BOPEE) for selecting candidates from among thousands of aspirants for medical, engineering and other degree courses.

The crime branch had registered the case following complaints about selections made in 2012. The fact that students who had topped the entrance exams had "poor academic history" raised eyebrows.
Peer's role had been questioned as he was the head of BOPEE at that time. The crime branch had earlier raided Peer's residences in Srinagar and Jammu.

According to sources in the crime branch, his bank accounts were also under scanner. The crime branch had also widened its investigation to nail those involved in alleged controlled examination. Some brokers had also been arrested and students were questioned to unearth the racket.

There are written complaints filed with the crime branch, alleging that a separate examination centre was set up on the banks of Dal Lake to secure admission for a selected few in the courses like MBBS. It is alleged that Rs. 20 lakh was paid by 12 candidates to secure seats in the Common Entrance Test 2012.
