Chief minister Omar Abdullah said the government's target was to transform Jammu and Kashmir from energy-deficit state to power sufficient within next seven to 10 years.

Taking a presentation on generation of solar power in Ladakh and Jammu regions in a meeting held on Wednesday, Omar said harnessing of green energy had been given considerable fillip by his government and generation of solar, thermal and wind power was getting due attention along with the launch of hydroelectric projects in the state.

The meeting was informed that Ladakh region alone had the potential of generating 12,000 MW of solar energy.

It has been identified that 86,900 km of land receives sunshine in the area and the radiation level in Ladakh is 6 to 7 kWh/m/day that is the best in the country.

The photovoltaic technology in which light energy is converted into electricity is best suited for harnessing solar energy in Ladakh region.

Abdullah said the interest of investors in the sector of New and Renewable Energy (N&RE) was highly encouraging and it would get further boost by the J&K State Solar Power Policy, which was in offing.

The chief minister said while the State Power Development Corporation was working on the execution of medium and mega-hydro electric projects, the department of science and technology was looking after implementation of micro-power projects.

He said projects under joint venture, IPP and PPP mode already approved by the government would catapult the indigenous production of hydropower in the state.

The meeting among others was attended by MoS, science and technology Feroz Ahmad Khan, principal secretary to the chief minister BB Vyas, principal secretary, power development department, AK Mehta, commissioner secretary, science and technology, Bipul Pathak and various other senior officers.
