A 22-year-old postgraduate student of Osmania University, who went missing on Saturday, was allegedly strangled by her friend at his residence in Chatrinaka area of old Hyderabad.

Police suspect the woman, staying in the university campus, was killed on Sunday by her friend PhD student Shiv Kumar, who is absconding.

The body was found by Kumar’s parents, who returned to the city late on Monday after celebrating Christmas at their native place. The police identified the woman with the help of a hall ticket found in her bag. “We have registered a murder case... not ruling out sexual assault. We are waiting for the forensic report,” said a police officer.

Police could not confirm media reports that Kumar had been stalking her for some time.

On Tuesday, Osmania University students blocked roads at Afzalgunj demanding immediate arrest of Kumar.
