Peace was shattered at ‘Abode of Peace’ Santiniketan on Sunday morning when a student of Sangeet Bhavan was shot dead by her fiancé inside a girl’s hostel of the Visva Bharati University. The killer then shot himself and later succumbed to his injuries.

Saswati Pal, a third-year student of the university, was shot at point blank range by her lover Amaresh Kundu, 26, who was reportedly a driver working for Kolkata Police. After killing Pal inside the Ananda Sadan hostel, Kundu pointed the gun at himself and fired. He was taken to the Bolpur sub-divisional hospital and later shifted to a Burdwan hospital where he was declared brought dead. Both Pal and Kundu belonged to Ghatal in West Midnapore district.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty said the revolver, which was used to commit the crime, was stolen from the Tollygunge police station in Kolkata on Sunday morning. Kundu was working in that police station.

Sources said at around 11 am on Sunday, Kundu reached Santiniketan and met Pal. “They had a fight. We didn’t bother as it was a personal thing,” said a student. “At around 12.15 pm, he reached the hostel and wanted to meet her again. He was asked to wait in the visitors’ room. After calling Saswati, I left. Within minutes, we heard the sound of gunfire,” said a hostel staffer.
